The Potbelly Hill – Is it really where it all started?
Posted: February 22, 2010 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: evolution, philosophy 4 Comments »Some years ago, I remember listening to Klaus Schmidt in the annual Turkish Archaeology Symposium. His talk was a series of descriptions of artifacts as the organizers required the people to present the material findings, rather than the theory. Hence, I was not paying that much attention. However, something was odd about that talk. I remember thinking to myself, well, these artifacts cannot be that old. Apparently, they were. Anatolia remains a fascinating place for anthropologists and archaeologists alike. It is a land where the history, recent and ancient, is yet to be written.

As for the tantalizing structures in Gobekli Tepe, one possibility emerges. In Dr. Schmidt’s words:
It was the urge to worship that brought mankind together in the very first urban conglomerations.
This brings to mind two questions:
1. Does that mean that worshiping is essential to formation of complex societies?
2. Then, is it not the case, if, as argued in “Breaking the Spell” by Dennett, religion is in fact an artifact of evolution, then our society exist because of this ‘anomaly’.
Another question remains. Regardless of religion’s factual/logical basis, what would the humanity have been like without it?

Üçüncüsü’ne is Douglas Adams cevap veriyor:
“Many were increasingly of the opinion that they’d all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans.”
I agree with you that this is just a fascinating site. We should pack and just go to Harran for a visit, no?
You may have posted it earlier but there was a coverage in Science about these findings in 2008: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/319/5861/278?maxtoshow=&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=seeking+the+roots+of+ritual&searchid=1&FIRSTINDEX=0&resourcetype=HWCIT
He also had an interview on Daily Mail which I found really interesting in terms of how far he was going with the interpretations of these findings: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1157784/Do-mysterious-stones-mark-site-Garden-Eden.html
I have been very interested in his findings since I’ve read about them and I have had the plans to write about these and similar works/theories in a popular-science review article format -yet to be realized like many other plans I’ve been postponing
The time scale in question is hard to grasp for the layperson; we simply don’t have the perspective to appreciate it. One has to be reminded again and again about how important this really is. You should write about it in a popular format as soon as possible, Atilgan, you are good at it…
And also many thanks to the person who always posts the most intriguing ideas/articles! You’re a jewel amongst the Facebook forwarding craze
